It is hard to believe that such a big voice can come from such a little lady. That is the first thing that makes you sit up and pay attention to the ear-grabbing vocalist/instrumentalist that goes by the name Janine and the Mixtape. Hip hop beats mixed with R&B vocals, pop melodies and synth combo’s let you know you are witnessing something fresh. There is the rawness of Biggie, the smoothness of Frank Ocean, the creativity of MIA, the simplicity of the XX and the pop sensibilities of New Order.
Behind the catchy hooks and rhythms is true feeling that is hard to come by in modern day pop. Real life experiences are what drive Janine’s lyrics. They are honest and soulful. Pain, darkness, loss and hope are reoccurring themes along with moments of cuteness and playful annotations of basketball and kicks.
She has sharpened her skills in all aspects of creativity. There is no part of Janine’s musical profile that has not been personally attended to – she produces all beats and instrumentation, builds her own websites, consistently reaches out to her fans through every social media site in existence and manages to deal with all live bookings. There are few as passionate enough to consistently work with such fierce determination. The most notable quality is the mind-blowing live show she and the band deliver.
Not content in being boxed into just one country and scene Janine set up shows in New York and set off to win the hearts of a city she believed would suit her unique style. It is in NYC that she really began to find her feet. The response she received was beyond encouraging. Even within a tiny time frame she begun to develop a loyal fan base and significant buzz. From recording to playing live she really has found a second home. This new lease of inspiration has further honed an international sound.
Her fans and audience are drooling with anticipation for more as she deliberately stalls in releasing material. Mini video clips from her blog and snippets of demos are all that she allows to be exposed until she is completely satisfied with the full final product. Janine is more than happy to think outside the box and approach the music industry in a way that is refreshing and captivating.
